-Smaller wire gauges like 20SWG come in much smaller ring sizes, and so can be more difficult to weave with since it's hard to see what you're doing.  Big wire gauges like 14SWG come in bigger ring sizes, which makes it easier to see what you're doing but are physically harder to manipulate.  If you're not sure which gauge you should use initially, it's a good idea to pick the middle gauges like 16SWG or 18SWG as they strike a good balance between strength, size, and ease of use for most people.

Aspect Ratio:

-Once you've decided which wire gauge to use, you can pick the ring size(s) you need based on each ring size's Aspect Ratio.  Aspect Ratio(AR) is the most important factor when picking ring sizes because every chainmail weave design has it's own AR number requirements, as well as it's Ideal AR.  The Ideal AR value for each weave is found by trial and error until a weave has both sufficient flexibility and aesthetic “tightness.”

AR=Inside Diameter/Wire Diameter(+Springback - blade kerf)----  For example 16SWG 1/4" ID would be:
(1/4")0.25/0.063(16SWG)=3.97, then we round up to 4.0 after accounting for a very small amount of springback when they are coiled. then minus a tiny amount accounting for saw blade kerf.

The Ideal AR value for each weave is found by trial and error until a weave has both sufficient flexibility and aesthetic “tightness.”  Generally speaking, if a weave is too tight/not flexible with a certain ring size, a higher AR is needed. On the other hand, if a weave is too loose/not holding its shape, a lower AR is usually needed. If you are a beginner, we'd recommend the higher end of the range of AR's as they can be easier to work with.

You can find each ring size's Aspect Ratio(AR) next to each ring size in the charts above.

    Anodized rings.

    I got 3 different sizes in different colors. Shipped quickly, quality control was perfect across the board, all of the colors looked great. Super lightweight, which is a major bonus for me. They don’t make my hands smell after handling them, which is an issue I unfortunately had with my homemade steel rings. The size chart that came with my order was incredibly helpful as I’m new to this, I would love to see it on the website (if it’s not there already) to make ordering easier. Overall 10/10, I’ll be bulk ordering very soon.

    I had so much fun with my first project using these rings for a little purple, black and silver bracelet. I may be addicted now. They worked nicely and are strong, quality rings. Thank you!

    I have yet to have a serious issue with any Chainmail Joe product. The one time I had some mistints mixed into my rings, he replaced them immediately. I always recommend Chainmail Joe to anyone looking for a quality, reliable supplier.

    Anodized rings

    I am very happy with the quality and consistency of their rings. I always receive the full volume I've selected, and they are shipped very quickly. There are only two things that would make the buying experience here better, at least for me. (1) A wider selection of colors, and (2) a small zip-lock baggie for each of the packets to make containing the rings, once the packet is opened, much easier.

    Anodized Rings

    I love the rings I have gotten from Chainmail Joe! the price is better than other places I have seen, and the customer service is great. I had a rough time with one order where one of the colors I ordered came to me as the wrong color. I let them know and that day they shipped out the correct rings. THEN the post office lost my package so on my next order I just reordered the rings, counting it off as a loss from bad luck. I did let them know that the post office lost my package in case they wanted to put in a claim to get their shipment money back and without my asking it of them they refunded me the price of the original rings. In my opinion they did not have to do this. They had already lost some money by sending me the wrong ones in the first place and sending me the correct rings. As far as I am concerned that is where their obligation to me ended since the post office was the one to lose my order. So, the fact they went above and beyond by still refunded me the price I spent reordering my rings has earned them a loyal customer for life.

    Enameled jump rings

    Posted by Julie on Feb 16th 2024

    I was very impressed with the product, the colors were beautiful and there was almost nothing wrong the jump rings, there was only one jump ring that was half a ring so I cant complain. I have order from OTHER places in the past where I have gotten warped and unusable rings and the colors being half scratched off. I will for SURE be ordering from chainmail Joe!!
